Yes, Smart Film can be installed on many types of existing glass, including single-pane, tempered and many double-pane windows. However, Low-E coatings, existing window tint, exterior exposure and the construction of an insulated glass unit (IGU) can affect whether retrofit Smart Film is the right choice.

Can Smart Film Go on Double-Pane Windows?

Yes, Smart Film may be installed on many double-pane windows, but the complete insulated glass unit should be evaluated first.

A double-pane window, also called an insulated glass unit or IGU, contains two panes separated by a sealed airspace. Depending on the window, the unit may also contain Low-E coatings, tinted glass, gas fills or other energy-efficiency features.

That is why “Is it double-pane?” is not the only question that matters.

For an exterior-facing IGU, consider:

• Whether the glass has a Low-E or reflective coating
• Whether either pane is tinted
• Which glass surface will receive the Smart Film
• How much direct solar exposure the window receives
• The manufacturer and construction of the IGU
• Whether the original window warranty restricts aftermarket films

If you have the manufacturer's glass specification, send it to Smart Glass Country before purchasing. If you do not, photos of the glass markings and overall window can help us evaluate the application.

For projects where the existing IGU is not an appropriate retrofit candidate, Smart Glass Country also manufactures switchable insulated glass units, including configurations with Low-E glass.

Can Smart Film Be Applied to Low-E Glass?

Possibly—but Low-E glass should be reviewed before Smart Film is installed.

Low-E, or low-emissivity, glass contains a coating designed to control heat transfer through the window. In an IGU, that coating can be located on different surfaces within the glass assembly.

This distinction matters because simply knowing that a window is “Low-E” does not tell us everything needed to determine Smart Film compatibility.

Before installing Smart Film on Low-E glass, determine:

1. Whether the Low-E coating is on an accessible surface or sealed within the IGU.
2. Which surface of the window would receive the Smart Film.
3. Whether the window has additional tint, reflective coatings or specialty treatments.
4. Whether the window manufacturer permits aftermarket film.

If you cannot identify the coating location, don't guess. Send us the window specifications or glass information so the assembly can be reviewed.

For new exterior glazing, Smart Glass Country can manufacture switchable IGUs with Low-E glass, eliminating the need to retrofit an existing Low-E window.

Can Smart Film Go on Tempered Glass?

Yes. Tempered glass is generally an excellent candidate for Smart Film.

Smart Film is applied to the surface of existing glass, so the glass does not need to be cut, drilled or structurally modified during the film installation.

As with any Smart Film installation, the surface should be smooth, clean and free from contamination before application.

Tempered glass is common in:

• Office partitions
• Conference rooms
• Glass doors
• Storefronts
• Residential interiors
• Commercial spaces

If the tempered glass also contains a tint, coating or other treatment, that additional feature should be considered separately.

Can Smart Film Go on Laminated Glass?

In most cases, yes.

Laminated glass consists of multiple layers permanently bonded together. If the exposed surface is smooth, clean and otherwise suitable for Smart Film, an existing laminated panel can often be retrofitted.

However, specialty laminated products can have additional coatings or unusual constructions. For architectural, security or specialty glass, we recommend confirming the exact glass specification before ordering Smart Film.

If you are purchasing new glass rather than retrofitting an existing panel, consider Smart Glass instead. With Smart Glass, the switchable PDLC layer is protected within the glass assembly rather than being applied to an exposed surface.

Which Side of the Glass Should Smart Film Be Installed On?

For a typical window retrofit, Smart Film is installed on the accessible interior-facing glass surface.

The installation surface must be extremely clean and properly prepared. Smart Glass Country's Smart Film Installation Guide also requires the edges of the installed film to be sealed with a non-acidic, neutral silicone sealant. Edge sealing helps protect the film from moisture, dust and environmental contaminants.

Projects involving exterior exposure, unusually high humidity or direct contact with water should be reviewed before installation.

For demanding environments, Smart Glass is often preferable because the switchable layer is protected within the glass itself.

What Glass Should Smart Film Not Be Applied To?

The most important requirement is a smooth, clean and suitable installation surface.

Smart Film should generally not be applied directly to:

• Rough or heavily textured glass
• Uneven patterned surfaces
• Contaminated or damaged glass
• Another layer of window film without prior approval
• Specialty coated glass unless compatibility has been confirmed

If your glass has an unidentified coating or unusual surface treatment, verify it before ordering.

Do I Need to Remove Existing Window Tint First?

If there is already an aftermarket film on the installation surface, do not simply install Smart Film over it.

Smart Film depends on correct surface preparation and uniform adhesion. The Smart Glass Country installation process calls for thoroughly cleaned glass before application.

If you have existing solar film, privacy tint or another aftermarket window film, let us know before ordering. In most retrofit situations, the existing film should be removed so the Smart Film can be installed onto the properly prepared glass surface.

Factory-tinted glass is different from aftermarket window film because the tint may be part of the glass itself. Factory-tinted glass should therefore be evaluated based on its specifications rather than treated as a removable film.

Can Smart Film Cause Thermal Stress in Double-Pane Glass?

The correct answer is: the risk depends on the complete glass assembly and its environment.

Adding any film to existing glazing can change how the window absorbs and handles solar energy. For that reason, an exterior-facing IGU should not be evaluated based only on the fact that it is “double-pane.”

Important variables include:

• Glass type and thickness
• Heat treatment
• Low-E or reflective coatings
• Existing tint
• Direction and intensity of sun exposure
• Condition and construction of the IGU

This is particularly important for exterior-facing windows receiving significant sunlight.

Rather than making a blanket assumption, send us the glass specification and project details. We can determine whether retrofit Smart Film is appropriate or whether a purpose-built Smart Glass IGU is the better solution.

Will Smart Film Void My Existing Window Warranty?

It depends on the window manufacturer.

Do not assume that applying Smart Film automatically voids every window warranty—and do not assume that it will have no effect.

Window manufacturers have their own warranty conditions concerning aftermarket films and modifications. If your windows are still under warranty, check the manufacturer's terms before installing any aftermarket window film.

Smart Glass Country's warranty covers the Smart Film product according to its own warranty terms; it does not replace the warranty supplied by the manufacturer of your existing window or IGU.

When Is Smart Glass Better Than Smart Film?

Smart Film is designed specifically as a retrofit solution. If you already have suitable glass installed and want switchable privacy without replacing it, Smart Film is usually the logical starting point.

Smart Glass may make more sense when:

You're already replacing or ordering new glass

If new glazing is part of the project, factory-manufactured Smart Glass provides an integrated solution rather than adding film to a newly purchased pane.

You're designing an exterior IGU

The glass will be exposed to demanding conditions
