During the COVID-19 crisis many people have found themselves confined to their homes and looking for innovative ways to use their living space and make their homes better suited to their needs. However, most people are avoiding having workers come into their homes, making do-it-yourself projects a popular option. Fortunately, our Smart Film product can be installed without the need for skilled labor in the comfort of your own home.

Switchable glass products go from clear to frosted with the flick of switch, providing privacy on demand. This makes transforming your space faster and easier than ever before and opens up a myriad of design possibilities for those looking to balance open, connected interiors with privacy and quiet. As many residents are staying home in condos looking across at other high rises, the need for additional privacy is surfacing.

Smart Film (also known as privacy film, switchable film, PDLC film or electric privacy film) is a film that is applied to existing glass, transforming it into switchable glass. This makes it the perfect retrofit option. Smart film can be installed in a matter of hours on windows, doors and glass walls. Smart Film can even be installed in moisture prone areas such as bathrooms and sealed with a silicon gel.

Popular applications for Smart Film include floor to ceiling windows, hard to reach windows such as skylights, glass partitions and walls and glass doors. Smart Film can be operated via a wall switch, home automation system, smartphone or voice command for your convenience.

Smart Glass Country’s Tips for Successful Smart Film Installation

Take Your Time

While there are many advertisements online showing switchable film installed in a matter of minutes, Smart Glass Country does not promote or advise this over simplified process. While Smart Film is easy to install, the best results are achieved when the film is applied slowly and carefully with attention to detail. Hastiness can lead to damage and other errors.

Choose a High Quality Vendor

Most of the disappointments associated with Smart Film are a result of choosing a poor quality product. Many cheap films on the market are quite thin and have unevenly distributed PDLC liquid crystals. This results in a low quality product that is easily damaged, hazy and not durable.

Avoid Trimming the Film Onsite

While Smart Film can be trimmed onsite, it should not be done unless necessary as it increases the likelihood that the film can be damaged. Smart Glass Country takes the time to precision manufacture each order to the customer’s exact specifications and add a 1/16 of an inch installation tolerance to each side for smooth installation. However, in some instances the film must be trimmed onsite such as arch windows and other irregular window shapes. In these cases, Smart Glass Country will provide specific instructions for trimming.
