How Smart Film Added Privacy to a Luxury Arizona Home Without Hiding Its Architecture

Custom windows often define the character of a luxury home. But when those windows include oversized panes, operable sections or dramatic arches, finding a privacy solution that complements the architecture can be difficult.

That was the challenge at this luxury residence in Phoenix, Arizona. The homeowner wanted switchable privacy without concealing the home’s arched windows and iron doors behind curtains, blinds or bulky custom window treatments.

The solution was approximately 181 square feet of Ultra Clear Smart Film, precisely customized for several different window shapes and operating styles.

A Custom Privacy Solution for a Luxury Home

This Arizona home included an assortment of distinctive windows and doors:

  • One 8-by-5-foot picture window
  • Two 3-by-5-foot casement windows
  • One smaller 18-inch picture window
  • One 4-by-8-foot sliding window
  • Two arched iron doors measuring approximately 3 feet wide by 10 feet tall
  • Operable venting glass within the arched doors

Conventional curtains or blinds would have hidden much of the custom glass and interrupted the clean architectural lines. The unusual shapes would also have required highly specialized custom window treatments.

Smart Film offered a more integrated alternative. Applied directly to the existing glass, it preserved the appearance of the windows while giving the homeowner privacy at the touch of a button.

Preserving the Home’s Custom Arched Windows

The two 10-foot-tall arched iron doors were the most distinctive feature of the project. Their height, curved shape and venting glass made conventional window coverings impractical.

Rather than hiding the arches, the Smart Film was cut onsite to follow the shape of each glass panel. This required detailed measurements and careful trimming to create a clean fit around the curved sections.

The busbars—the conductive strips that supply electricity to the Smart Film—were positioned along the bottom width of the glass. This helped keep the electrical connections discreet and preserved the appearance of the custom doors.

The result was switchable privacy designed around the architecture rather than a product that forced the architecture to adapt.

Adding Smart Film to Operable Windows

Applying electric window tint to fixed glass is relatively straightforward because neither the glass nor its electrical connections need to move. Operable windows require additional planning.

Several windows in this Phoenix home opened or moved as part of their normal operation. Magnetic connectors were used so the Smart Film could receive power while accommodating that movement.

The installation was also divided into multiple control zones. This allows different sections of Smart Film to be operated independently rather than requiring every window and door to change state at the same time.

For example, the homeowner can activate privacy on one group of windows while leaving another area transparent. This level of control helps the Smart Film respond to changing privacy, lighting and space-use needs throughout the home.

Why Smart Film Worked for This Arizona Home

Smart Film was well suited to this project for several reasons.

It preserved the architecture

The homeowner did not have to cover the custom arches, ironwork or expansive glass with curtains or blinds.

It provided privacy on demand

The glass can change from transparent to private in an instant, giving the homeowner control over privacy throughout the day.

It worked with existing glass

As a retrofit product, the Smart Film was applied to the existing windows and doors. The project did not require replacing the home’s custom glass with entirely new window units.

It accommodated different window styles

The installation included picture windows, casement windows, a slider, arched doors and operable venting glass. The film and electrical system were customized for each application.

It complemented the smart-home experience

Because Smart Film is electrically controlled, it can become part of a broader smart-home design. Depending on the selected control system, switchable privacy may be operated using wall switches, remote controls or compatible automation components.

Can Smart Film Be Customized for Arched Windows?

Yes. Smart Film can be customized for many arched and unusually shaped glass panels, provided the application is properly evaluated and measured.

Curved edges, separate glass sections, moving windows and electrical connection points must all be considered during planning. Complex projects may require onsite cutting and custom wiring solutions, as demonstrated by this Phoenix installation.

The glass itself should be smooth, flat, clean and compatible with the film. Smart Film should not be applied to curved glass or flexible plastic surfaces unless the product has been specifically approved for that application.

Privacy Designed Around the Home

This luxury Arizona home demonstrates what is possible when a privacy solution is planned around the architecture.

Approximately 181 square feet of Ultra Clear Smart Film transformed the picture windows, casement windows, slider and custom arched doors into controllable privacy surfaces. The homeowner can now switch the glass from transparent to private without hiding the home’s defining features behind conventional window coverings.
