Smart glass installation case study | New York City | Smart Glass Country

When Dr. James Kelly set out to upgrade the patient experience at Park Avenue Eye — his ophthalmology practice located on one of Manhattan's most prestigious medical corridors — he faced a challenge that will be familiar to any clinic owner who has ever tried to improve a working medical space.

The clinic needed better privacy. Not just visual privacy, but the kind of complete, confident, on-demand privacy that a modern medical environment demands — the kind that reassures patients, satisfies confidentiality requirements, and signals to every person who walks through the door that this practice takes their care seriously.

What he didn't want was weeks of construction noise, dust, and a bill that made custom smart glass feel out of reach.

What he got instead was Smart Glass SPACES.

In just a couple of days, with no major construction and no heavy contractors, Park Avenue Eye was transformed. The result is a clinic that looks like it belongs on the cover of a healthcare design magazine — bright, open, and modern, with switchable glass partitions that frost to full opacity in less than a second and clear just as fast.

This is the full story of that project. Watch the video below to see a video testimonial from Dr Kelly himself:

The Challenge: Privacy, Aesthetics, and a Space Worth Walking Into

Park Avenue Eye operates in a demanding environment on multiple levels. Located in Manhattan, the practice serves a discerning patient base with high expectations — not just for clinical quality, but for the physical environment in which care is delivered. The space needs to feel premium, modern, and trustworthy from the first moment a patient steps inside.

At the same time, it has to function as a real clinical environment, which means patient privacy is non-negotiable. HIPAA compliance isn't just a regulatory checkbox — it's a basic expectation of care. Patients need to know that when they're being examined, consulted with, or receiving a diagnosis, they have genuine visual and acoustic separation from the rest of the clinic.

The traditional solutions to this problem — privacy curtains, drywall partition walls, or static frosted glass panels — each carry their own compromises.

Privacy curtains are a maintenance and infection control liability. They harbor dust, collect bacteria, require regular laundering, and look institutional in a way that undercuts any effort to create a premium patient environment. In an eye care setting where cleanliness and precision are part of the brand, curtains send the wrong signal entirely.

Drywall partitions solve the privacy problem but create several new ones: they typically require permits, a disruptive multi-day or multi-week build, and they're permanent. Once the walls are up, the floor plan is fixed. If patient volume grows, if a new service is added, if the practice expands — the walls have to come down and go back up, with all the disruption and cost that entails.

Static frosted glass gives a modern aesthetic but sacrifices the open, airy feel that makes a clinic feel welcoming rather than claustrophobic. When privacy glass is always frosted, the space feels divided and closed — the opposite of the bright, professional environment Dr. Kelly wanted.

Smart Glass SPACES offered a fourth path: fully transparent when privacy isn't needed, fully frosted when it is, and completely reconfigurable whenever the practice evolves.

The Solution: Smart Glass SPACES by Smart Glass Country

Smart Glass SPACES is Smart Glass Country's modular, pre-fabricated switchable glass partition system — designed to bring the premium performance of custom smart glass to commercial and medical environments without the custom price tag, lengthy construction timeline, or permanence.

The system is built around a few core principles that make it particularly well-suited to environments like Park Avenue Eye.

Modular, Pre-Fabricated Design

Rather than ordering custom-cut glass panels for each installation — which drives up cost and lead time significantly — Smart Glass SPACES uses standardized 42" × 96" PDLC smart glass panels combined with custom wooden inserts that precision-fill any remaining gaps in the floor plan. The result is a system that fits virtually any space exactly, without the lead times or costs associated with bespoke fabrication.

The inserts are available in three finishes — Dark Wood, Mahogany Night, and Pale Steel — so they integrate cleanly with a wide range of interior palettes. At Park Avenue Eye, the finished partition system looks custom-built, because from a design perspective, it effectively is.

Minimalist Aluminum Framing — No Vertical Posts

The structural system uses lightweight aerospace aluminum U-channels at the top and bottom of each panel. No vertical posts, no bulky corner columns, no frame elements that interrupt the line of sight. The result is the clean, near-frameless aesthetic that makes smart glass partitions so visually compelling — the glass appears to float between floor and ceiling, anchored by the thinnest possible metal detail.

All electrical components and wiring are routed inside these channels and connected via quick-connect terminals at the frame base. There is no exposed wiring, no conduit running along the wall, no visible technology of any kind. The installation looks like a premium architectural feature, not a technology retrofit.

Pre-Assembled Door Modules

The smart glass door modules at Park Avenue Eye arrived on-site fully pre-assembled and pre-wired. The door glass, frame, hardware, and electrical connections are all factory-integrated before delivery, which means the installation team simply places the module, connects it to the channel system, and it's operational. No on-site glazing, no complicated wiring runs, no multi-trade coordination.

This is one of the details that makes the Smart Glass SPACES installation so much leaner than traditional alternatives. When the most complex component of a partition system arrives ready to install, everything else follows efficiently.

PDLC Smart Glass Technology

The glass itself uses PDLC technology — Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal — the same technology found in high-end architectural smart glass installations worldwide. In its default unpowered state, the liquid crystals inside the glass are randomly oriented, scattering light and making the glass appear opaque. When voltage is applied, the crystals align and the glass becomes transparent. The transition happens in under 0.1 seconds.

For a clinic like Park Avenue Eye, this means that the moment a patient needs privacy — whether for an examination, a sensitive conversation, or simply a moment of comfort — a staff member can provide it instantly, without interrupting the clinical interaction, and without any of the fumbling that comes with a curtain or blind.

The Installation: Efficient, Tool-Light, No Heavy Construction

The Park Avenue Eye installation was completed by a Smart Glass Country crew over the course of a couple of days — with no major construction equipment, no specialist trades, and no extensive site preparation required.

Here's how the process works.

Channel placement. The lightweight aluminum U-channels are positioned and secured at the top and bottom of the installation area. Because there are no vertical posts, the structural footprint of the system is minimal — just two horizontal elements per panel run.

Wiring and power. The quick-connect terminals are threaded through the base channels before the glass goes in. All wiring is contained within the channel profile — nothing runs exposed along the wall or floor.

Panel installation. The 42" × 96" smart glass panels are lifted into position using suction cups and dropped into the top and bottom channels. Any remaining gaps in the layout are filled with the custom wooden inserts, trimmed on-site to the exact dimension required.

Door module placement. The pre-assembled door module is positioned in the partition run and connected to the channel system. Because it arrives pre-wired, the electrical connection is a clean, straightforward terminal-to-terminal hookup.

Power on. The system is connected to power, tested, and commissioned. The glass switches. The installation is complete.

Tools used across the entire process: an Allen key, suction cups, and a power drill. Crew size: two to three people. Heavy equipment: none. Permits required: none.

Smart Glass SPACES installs significantly faster than traditional glass partition systems — and in a medical setting where every day matters, that efficiency translates directly into less disruption and faster access to a finished, functional space.

The Result: What Smart Glass SPACES Delivers for a Clinic

Walking into Park Avenue Eye after the installation, the transformation is immediate. The space feels simultaneously more open and more private than a conventional partitioned clinic — which sounds like a contradiction until you understand what switchable glass actually does to a room.

When the glass is transparent, the clinic reads as a single bright, open, connected space. Light moves freely through the partitions. Staff can see across the floor plan. The environment feels modern, clean, and welcoming — the kind of space that immediately signals to patients that this is a practice that takes every detail seriously.

When privacy is needed, the glass frosts. In that fraction of a second, the space reconfigures. A consultation room appears. An examination bay closes. A patient's personal moment is contained and protected, without any physical movement of panels, curtains, or furniture.

And then, just as instantly, it opens again.

Patient Privacy That Actually Works

HIPAA compliance in a clinic environment is about more than visual barriers. It's about acoustic separation too — ensuring that a patient's diagnosis, treatment discussion, or personal health information cannot be overheard by others in the space.

Smart Glass SPACES delivers up to 45 dB of lab-tested acoustic soundproofing. That level of sound attenuation means that normal conversational speech at a consultation volume is effectively contained within the glass partition system. Sensitive conversations stay private not just visually, but acoustically — giving patients and staff alike a genuine sense of confidentiality.

Infection Control Without Compromise

In any medical environment, surface hygiene is a clinical responsibility. Privacy curtains — one of the most common partition solutions in clinic spaces — are a documented infection control risk. They are difficult to sanitize, infrequently replaced, and can harbor pathogens between patients.

The non-porous glass surface of Smart Glass SPACES wipes clean in seconds with standard clinical disinfectants. There is no fabric, no weave, no porous surface that can trap dust or bacteria. For an eye care clinic where cleanliness and precision are central to the patient experience, the difference is meaningful.

Smart Glass SPACES panels can also be ordered with antimicrobial coatings for environments with the highest hygiene requirements.

A Premium Aesthetic That Earns Patient Trust

There is a well-documented relationship between the physical environment of a healthcare setting and the level of trust patients place in the care they receive. A clinic that looks modern, intentional, and invested in quality signals to patients — before a single word is spoken — that the practice shares those values.

At Park Avenue Eye, the Smart Glass SPACES installation created a sleek, frameless glass environment that reads as genuinely architectural. The minimalist aluminum channels, the floor-to-ceiling glass, the complete absence of visible hardware or wiring — it all communicates deliberate, premium design.

For a practice on Park Avenue, that level of environmental investment is not incidental. It's part of the care offering.

Flexibility for a Growing Practice

One of the less obvious but deeply practical advantages of the Smart Glass SPACES system is what it makes possible in the future.

Because 90% of the system's components are reusable and reconfigurable, the practice is not locked into its current floor plan. If patient volume grows and a new consultation pod is needed, the existing panels can be reconfigured to accommodate it — without ordering new glass, without hiring contractors. If the practice moves or expands, the partitions move with it. The same investment that transformed the clinic today becomes the infrastructure that adapts it tomorrow.

Smart Glass for Medical Environments: Why It Makes Sense

Park Avenue Eye is part of a broader shift in how medical practices think about their physical environments.

The traditional clinical aesthetic — functional, institutional, optimized for workflow rather than experience — is giving way to something more considered. As patient expectations rise and the healthcare consumer becomes more sophisticated, the physical environment of a clinic has become a genuine competitive differentiator.

Smart glass sits at the center of this shift for several reasons.

It solves the privacy-versus-openness tradeoff that has always forced medical designers to choose between a connected, welcoming space and a private, confidential one. Switchable glass eliminates that tradeoff entirely — the same partition that feels open and inviting during a routine check-in becomes a fully private room the moment care requires it.

It replaces the most problematic legacy solution — the privacy curtain — with something that performs better on every axis that matters in a medical context: hygiene, aesthetics, acoustic performance, and patient experience.

It integrates with the direction healthcare facilities are moving — toward smart building technologies and environments that respond dynamically to the needs of staff and patients. Smart Glass SPACES integrates with Z-Wave, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, and voice assistant systems, making it a natural component of a broader smart clinic automation setup.

It makes the financial case more compellingly than ever. At $130–$190 per square foot installed — significantly below the cost of custom smart glass fabrication — Smart Glass SPACES brings switchable glass technology within reach of independent practices and growing clinic groups, not just large hospital systems with major capital expenditure budgets.

What Dr. Kelly Said

Dr. James Kelly's response to the finished installation captures what Smart Glass SPACES delivers better than any specification sheet.

The moment the glass switched for the first time — transparent to frosted in a fraction of a second — his reaction was immediate. This was exactly what a medical environment needed: privacy that responded in real time, without interrupting care, without requiring any physical reconfiguration of the space.

The impact on his patients has been tangible. The confidence that comes from knowing privacy is instant and total — not dependent on a curtain being drawn correctly, not limited by the acoustic transparency of a fabric barrier — changes the dynamic of a clinical interaction. Patients are more at ease. Consultations feel more contained. The environment communicates, without words, that the practice takes every aspect of patient care seriously.

Is Smart Glass SPACES Right for Your Clinic?

If you're running a medical practice — whether that's a specialty clinic like Park Avenue Eye, a general practice, a dental office, a therapy suite, or any other healthcare environment — the questions worth asking are straightforward.

Do your patients currently have the level of privacy they deserve? Not just technically, but genuinely — the kind that makes them feel safe, respected, and confident that their personal health information is protected?

Does your current partition solution create infection control risks that a non-porous, easily sanitized glass surface would eliminate?

Is your floor plan fixed in a way that limits your ability to adapt as your practice grows?

Does the physical environment of your clinic reflect the quality of care you provide?

If the answer to any of those questions points toward something better than what you currently have, Smart Glass SPACES is worth a conversation.
